Candy
I picked the source pic up from Morning Studio recently, it looks like an old photo (says 2003 on the fine print) but I just really really liked the color of it, so took it for an experiment.
It is probably a trading card of some sort so the scan was kind of small, in accordance to that I sized it way down so Miki just sits on the corner. This sort of layout is actually pretty easy to work with, I just manipulated the background as a gradient, then added some patterns to it. Next was to throw a cascading backdrop of Miki's shadow so it looks as if in motion.
The color was so orange/redish, the first thing came to mind was "candy", so I went add the text with the font "Candice", which coincidentally it's also used on the Alo Hello photobooks, but it's irrelevant here...
Finally I tried out 3 alternative color combinations, the "rainbow" ver was to enhance the tropical juice feel, the "pink" ver is just well.. Mikitty is always pink these days, and the "milk" ver is a compliment to the OS X GUI theme Milk, where the Babyblue is a major accent within.
